Saturday MOPS: January Guest Speaker - Kathi Lipp
It's about respect.
It's about letting your husband know that you still think he is a hottie! Have you and your husband gone from over-the-top romantics to tolerant roommates? Do you dress up more to go out to dinner with your girlfriends than you do with your husband? Have you forgotten the fine art of flirting with your guy? Maybe it is time to put your husband on "Project Status". In The Husband Project, author Kathi Lipp shows you how, even in the midst of your busy schedule, to take your marriage from ordinary to amazing in just 21 days. Through simple daily action plans, you'll discover fun and creative ways to bring back that lovin' feeling - and to remind you and your guy why you got married in the first place. So grab a couple of friends and rise to the challenge that women across the US have taken: three weeks of putting your man before kids, housework, jobs and even shopping at Target.
We know there are a lot of single moms in our group - 90% of the principles that Kathi will address can be applied to ANY of the important men in your life! Dads, brothers, grandfathers, sons, coworkers - whether you are married now or not, you will get something out of this and have a great time, too!
This promises to be a great session with a fun, dynamic speaker and lots of lively discussion.
Join us on Saturday, January 8 from 9:30-11:30am! See you then - and bring a friend!
Monday, December 20, 2010

Get to know.... Danielle Humphreys, Steering Team
Danielle Humphreys, our newest addition to the MOPS Steering Team, has been married to Matthew, a native Oregonian, for over 7 years. She enjoys being creative, backyard farming, music, eating good food with good friends, and is an Independent Consultant for The Pampered Chef on the side. She also serves as one of the adult leaders in the youth ministry at Campbell Church of Christ and loves being around teenagers. She and Matthew have two sons, ages 3 and 9 months. Danielle is one of the welcoming faces you will meet at our Wednesday MOPS gatherings!
Here are some other fun facts about Danielle:
Where are you from?
I am a California native! I grew up in the East Bay and have lived all over the Golden State—Santa Barbara, Huntington Beach, Pasadena, Sunnyvale, Mountain View, and for the past couple of years, Campbell. It’s nice to be back in the Bay Area! What was your childhood like? I have a sister who is 9 years older than me, so it was fun growing up with a cool older sister who could drive and take me to do all the fun stuff my parents wouldn’t do, like go horseback riding. I was still in elementary school when she graduated and left for college, so I felt like an only child at times. I was a good student academically and participated in high school sports. A lot of my value and self-esteem came from the approval of the adults in my life (parents and teachers).
What values did your family emphasize when you were a child? My parents always encouraged me to do my best in school—education was a high value. My dad took us to Catholic church every Sunday and I, being the good student, was also a good Catholic and sincerely believed in God. A strong work ethic was balanced out by vacations or day trips to local festivals. We always ate dinner together and discussed life at the table, and meals are still a strong tie that binds us together today.
What did you study and where did you go to school?
I have a Bachelors Degree in Aquatic Biology from UC Santa Barbara (ole, ole, ole, ole, Gauchos, Gauchos!). I started out pre-med, considered switching to art studio, and ended up in aquatic bio! Being involved with InterVarsity Christian Fellowship really helped me to grow as a follower of Jesus. I also have a Masters Degree in Theology from Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena. I loved my seminary classes and I love thinking about and discussing theological issues and practical application for our life and the Church. Fun Fact: I met my husband, Matt during orientation at Fuller in 2001. Before becoming a mom, what did you do? I helped design worship services and did graphic design both with Fuller’s Chapel office and at our previous church, and was a commissioned Pastor to Youth and Families along with Matt. I have been in youth ministry for the past 12 years in both paid and volunteer roles. I stepped out of “professional” ministry after Noah was around 1 ½ years old because it became too hard to balance consistent bedtimes and non-traditional work hours that come with doing youth ministry!
What do you miss most about being a working mom?
I feel like I’m losing my skills, my “street-cred” so to speak. I miss having a mental shift and being able to really focus on something that is intellectually stimulating and challenging, and of course being able to invest more in our teens. I also miss working with Matt, being on a staff and collaborating with people. It’s been, and is, a hard transition to being a SAHM, which is one of the reasons why I need the support and encouragement of MOPS!
What is the best thing about being a stay-at-home mom?
Being able to play with my kids and have a major influence on them throughout the day. It can also be fun to tackle crazy new projects, from learning how to make homemade pickles to learning how to sew.
Who are the most important women in your life right now?
My mom and my sister. My sister had her first baby, a son, 1 week after my second son was born, so we are having fun walking alongside one another and watching our kids grow up together. My mom has been a huge support in my life and I’m thankful both my mom and sister live in the area. I am thankful for new friends I’ve made through church and for my old friends that I still keep in touch with as well.
Favorite thing to do in your spare time?
In those rare moments, I like to read or watch a little TV with my hubby at the end of the day.
Favorite way to be spoiled?
I like going out to eat (especially if it involves chocolate at some point!), but real spoiling would be getting a massage! I have some serious knots in my back and shoulders!
Best piece of advice anyone ever gave you about being a mother of young children?
Teresa Drake (www.teresadrake.com) who just spoke at our Weds. MOPS group, taught us 3 responses we can give to people who give uninvited and uninformed criticism:
“That’s a clever idea…”
“Hmmm, that sounds interesting…”
“I’ll have to look into that…”
There will always be people in your life that criticize something about your parenting, and these are tried and true responses I have used to politely avoid an argument!

True Destiny (and enter to win!)
True Destiny is for the Ordinary, by MaryLu Tyndall
In high school, I was the shy, introverted, pimple-faced, nerd who nevergot a date. Months of piano lessons faltered on my clumsy hands, my cooking would make the staunchest overeater lose weight, and I was always the last one picked for sports. Have you ever felt like you don't measure up-that you aren't pretty enough, smart enough, funny enough, or talented enough to bring any value to this world? Most of my life I felt like God must have made a mistake when He created me, but the truth is, God made me exactly the way I was for a reason.
Seven years ago, God told me He had something for me to do that would blow me away. At the time, I was working at a job I hated, my kids were rebelling, and my marriage was falling apart. I thought I had misunderstood Him. Besides, what could I do? I couldn't even handle my own ordinary life. But, I wanted to believe Him. So, I stopped fighting and I gave Him complete control. Within two years, my first novel was published. Now I'm working on my 9th! At the time God spoke to me, I hadn't considered becoming a novelist, hadn't written a word, had no prior education or training. Now, I'm doing something I love and using it to glorify God. This is my destiny! So many people go through their entire lives and miss their destinies. Don't let that happen to you. Submit to God. No matter what He asks you to do, no matter the struggles, the trials, submit to Him and His will. And in Romans 12:2, He promises that His will for you is perfect, pleasing and good-something you and only you can do.
Want a free copy of MaryLu's latest book Surrender the Heart? Email Kathi at contests@kathilipp.com by August 28th for a chance to win one! Learn more about the books of MaryLu Tyndall on her website .

It's Never Too Early to Teach Children to "Do Their Fair Share"
Summertime. Time to relax. Time to have fun. And the perfect time to teach the kids new chores. That's right, new chores.
So many times throughout the year I've wanted to institute a few changes around our home, but the pressure of school-related time constraints kept my goals on hold. Long summer days, and the absence of the regular school-day routine, makes it an ideal time to change things up a bit.
Sure, we'll still be playing and exploring, but we'll also be learning more about personal responsibility, contributing to the community (our family and household operations) and getting the job done right. Yes, that last part is REALLY important to me, so I will make it my business to make it important to my children.
There's a lot of talk these days about kids and their collective sense of entitlement. So, rather than simply ranting about how unacceptable and annoying it is, I'm going postal, I mean, proactive! My kids will learn new ways to contribute to the well-being of their community via house-cleaning chores; a novel thought, indeed. While I don't expect them to jump for joy, as they're too old to enjoy being "big helpers," I do anticipate (okay, really I hope to see) their sense of pride and joy at a job well done.
The key to success will be tempering my type-A tendency and gold star expectations with their age-appropriate abilities. That's the challenge for all of us parents looking to instruct our kids in the fine art of...sweeping, mowing, dishwashing, vacuuming - you name it. Presumably, we've had years to perfect our approach, but our children are mere beginners. And let's not fall into the "when I was your age" trap; remember, it's not about you.
Four things influence the process of motivating children to do their chores, according to John Covey, in his book, The Seven Habits of Highly Effective Families: A Proactive Family Guide.
• Parents must model being responsible by doing housework themselves.
• Parents must have a caring relationship with each child in the family.
• The culture in the home must be cooperative. Do you do things together? Do you help each other?
• Parents must see chores as an opportunity to teach their children both important life skills and values.
To keep your chore-ambitions in check, take a peek at the websites below that list suggestions for chores by age.

Speaker Recap: Gini Bortz on "Quick & Easy Dinners"!
Timesaving tips!
* Keep your wastebasket within arm's reach when you're cooking, so you don't have to continually cross your kitchen.
* Freeze meals ahead of time to use during busy weeknights.
* Gini had many positive things to say about pressure-cooking, and how it has transformed her cooking into a shorter, easier process (and who would have thought you could make cheesecake in a pressure cooker?)
* Lining your pan with parchment paper saves on clean-up time!
* Meet up with a friend and have a "cooking play date"--let your kids play together while you prepare a few meals together to freeze.
Involve your child in the cooking process!
* Your child can help grease cake pans with butter.
* Try letting your child dredge chicken nuggets in the cornflake mixture.
* Your child might enjoy washing vegetables or ripping lettuce.
* Make meals interesting! Can your child make a picture out of salad ingredients on a tray? Make a face with veggies on an English muffin pizza? Fun, tasty, and healthy.
Yum, yum!
During her talk, we got to see Gini prepare Lemon Cheesecake, Rotini with Meat Sauce, Wacky Chocolate Cake (it was even a vegan recipe!) and Baked Chicken Nuggets. Four recipes, from start to finish, in about an hour and a half? Wahoo! And then we got to eat them, too--delicious!

Get to know... Mary Ruby, Mentor Mom
When you ask her about her life, Mary Ruby beams: “I feel like I’ve had a wonderful life! I have felt like God has watched over me all my life.”
Born in Pueblo, Colorado, Mary feels fortunate to have had a father who was always happy, and a mother who, during the Great Depression, made “milk and bread for lunch taste good.” When Mary was three years old her family moved to Salt Lake City, Utah, where they raised rabbits for food. On Sunday mornings, Mary and her sister, Clydene, would catch the trolley to go to church; then, for fun “we would buy an all-day ticket and ride the trolley all over town. One bus driver was even a ventriloquist!
Mary started nurse’s training at the University of Utah, but when her father died, she left school and went to work for a radio-tube plant as a part of the war effort of World War II. Later she worked for United Airlines in food service, then in the dispatch office, checking weather and schedules for pilots.
When a group of Pepperdine College (now Pepperdine University) students visited her area, Mary met Lowry (her future husband) “in a cherry tree!” She found he had all the qualifications for the husband she envisioned: he was a Christian, had blue eyes, and did not drink or smoke (he was only missing the dark hair…). Lowry returned to California, and he and Mary wrote to each other for 4 months. He came to visit her in December, and he proposed. They were married in the church where Mary had grown up. She was 21. .
Mary and Lowry lived all along the coast of California. They had three children; the youngest, Don, is married to CCS’ beloved PE Teacher, Cheryl Ruby.
Mary has always lived a life based on service. She has taught kids with learning disabilities, as well as working as a psychiatric technician until the age of 65. At the Campbell Church, Mary taught 4th/5th grade Bible class for 40 years! She helps lead the 2nd/3rd grade girls’ club, Tuesday morning Women’s Bible Study, and works in the CCS Resource Room every Thursday morning. In addition (and all this “in retirement”) Mary is a leader in the Seniors’ group, visits friends and is in the process of learning to use a computer.
Mary is a firm believer in living life to its fullest. At the age of 69, with her sister Clydene (age 70) Mary Ruby went…(wait for it)…bungee jumping! Shortly after losing Lowry, her husband of almost 60 years, Mary traveled to Nairobi, Kenya with a missionary group from the Campbell Church, helping the students and leaders at Made In the Streets.
Mary says about herself: “I am happy, I have things to do, I have friends. The church has always been my family. I’ve never felt I didn’t have a place to go because I’ve always felt I had it in the church. No matter where I went, it was home. I’ve always felt they were my people.”
When asked what parenting advice she would give a young mother, Mary replied: “All you can do is show the way, and they make their choices. They don’t always make the choices you want, but my mother told me you keep on teaching them. You leave them in God’s hands, and be a good example.”
